Andy Strominger and Sean Carroll discuss the 40+ year journey from string theory to imaging the holographic horizon of M87
Sean Carroll’s Mindscape 222 Podcast (1/9/2023) with Andrew Strominger on Quantum Gravity and the Real World
The whole podcast is great and sets the context. But it you start at 1:13:18 Andy says just a bit later, “look at the numerical sim of the first LIGO merger and ask where is the holographic plate?”
That thin light gray ring around the black hole void is the Bekenstein-Hawking Bound of the M87 black hole image by the EHT in 2018-2019.
The schematic diagram of which I saw on the screen of John Wheeler’s Macintosh when I met with him in South Bristol in 1990.
Photos of Andy Strominger and some of his presentation I took at World Science Festival 2019.
This slide gives good background for this part of his discussion with Sean.
